I was putting together a big elaborate post-election video… but in the comments to the Placenta video, Frank Carver reminded me to take my own advice: the key to success in posting every day for Videoblogging Month is to avoid ambition – don’t up the ante each day. Just carry your camera with you, capture a simple moment and share it.
And I’ve been really enjoying Elsie Escobar‘s VloMo videos – she’s recording her baby girl’s first few weeks. She made me realise: I have a videoblog, we’re thousands of miles from home, and I’ve hardly posted any video or pictures of Lila for all our family and friends. She’s seven weeks old and almost 14lbs already! So to start with, here’s 90 seconds from breakfast.
I love how all these VloMo videos and comments are creating responses and conversations.

Speaking of madness, it’s suddenly Videoblogging Month again. Already? How did that happen?
Last year it was called NaVloPoMo, but it’s (sadly?) just been renamed Videoblogging Month 2008 – VloMo08 for short.
Post one video every day in November. That’s all you have to do…
2007 was the first year, and it turned out to be an incredible collaborative experiment. Exhausting but rewarding. I hope this year is as much fun.
Actually, I think for me it’ll be *more* fun. Last year I just didn’t have time to watch enough. But then, between us all, we made over 1000 videos in 30 days.

As most of you know, Lila was born AGES ago. I’ve resisted publishing any videos until now. She’s four weeks old today, and with a prompt from Kate, I figure that’s enough of a respectful pause. It was about as good a birth as you could hope for – 3 hour labour from 6am to 9am, born in water, 8lbs 5oz. I won’t get into why we chose a home birth – that’s for another post, maybe. But this is quite a nice memento of the days leading up to it (she was born 7 days after this) and once it’s up on the web, I’m sure some of you watching it will be new parents who are frantically Googling for information about what your home birth will be like. Good luck! Our two have been the most amazing experiences of my life.

i’ve been deliberately absent.
sometimes i want to post, and post ephemera. other times, i get busy.
last time i had a baby, i deleted my blogs.
this time, i got an attack of the privates.
i tweeted some of lila’s birth – but my twitter is set to private, now. i shared video of lila with family, but not here. no pictures on flickr.
i’m sure i’ll soon be cured.
i thought i’d post about moving to canada. i thought i’d post about our new town, our pregnancy, about having a home birth, about hypervideo and about my writing. this isn’t an apology for not doing that. it’s just a note to myself that i didn’t do any of it.
everything’s in flux. macro and micro. things are coming together here, i think. family, work, creative projects, plans for the apocalypse.
this became our family blog. kate sees this as our window on the world, where family and friends come to see what we’re doing out here. that must be why i feel self-conscious. like i can’t even use bad language. and i use bad language a lot.
documenting needs to be scrappy. videos need to be sketchy. writing needs to fail. posts need to be boring. i need another place. but you are all subscribed here.
is it ok, family & friends people, if this blog is not a family photo album, if it’s just an incomprehensible fucked up studio of RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA?

Indecision – an interactive hyper-videoblog story
RAAAAAAAAAA!
I finally did what I’ve been meaning to do for about 2 1/2 years. I made a hyper-videoblog post.

The thing that finally spurred me on was YouTube’s new Annotations feature. All this time, I’ve been waiting and hoping that they would introduce something like this.
But at the moment, they only allow you to use it on their site – no embedded players yet.
There are six different parts to it – what path you take is up to you. Click the options at the end of each clip to choose what I do.
I really was feeling indecisive about what to do with my evening – and it proved the perfect subject. I made it up as I went along, and it took 30 mins to shoot and 90 mins to get the clips onto the Mac, onto YouTube and Annotated with links.
I’ve always thought that for my hypervideo dreams to become reality, hyperlinked video would need to be a) easy to use, b) easy to create and c) within a setting that people are already comfortable with.
I’ve been working on much more complex hypervideo stories, and if this quick slapdash bit of fun seems to work, I’ll start putting some together properly. Let me know what you think.
It’s been a good week for me with my old nemesis YouTube. Tumblr saw my High Quality YouTube Embed Generator (thanks to Wreck and Salvage) and implemented it as standard on all Tumblr YouTube embedded players. So I helped make the world a prettier place.
The future is now! Even if this particular part of the future looks a bit like a Choose Your Own Adventure Book from 1982.

Immigrant Video Diary – Episode 2: “(Nothing But) Flowers”
One of the things that excited Kate most about coming here was the idea of learning to garden, to have her own vegetable patch.
The topsoil here isn't so good, and would need more added – and it was important to Katie that she should do it all herself. And she was 7 months pregnant, so didn't feel much like digging and turning a big bed. So she built a raised bed.
She used the shipping boxes from our move as a base (they'll rot away), then covered that with compost and cut grass left by the previous owners of our house.
Then she bought organic soil and manure in big plastic bags – not the greenest solution – but hey, you gotta start somewhere.
Turns out she's got green fingers.
